The objective of the seminar was to provide participants with an overview of the opportunities and challenges associated with marine renewable energies, with a particular focus on wave energy technologies, governance aspects and the policy framework supporting their deployment. It also served as an opportunity to disseminate key AWESDI results and promote informed dialogue on the sustainable development of marine energy in the Atlantic Area.
The event was primarily addressed to university students, researchers and academics participating in the BlueEcoEU Jean Monnet Module, as well as professionals and stakeholders interested in marine renewable energies, sustainable blue economy governance and energy transition policies.
AWESDI participated in the seminar “Marine Renewable Energies: Opportunities and Challenges”, organised within the Jean Monnet Module Legal and Governance Aspects of the Sustainable Blue Economy of the European Union (BlueEcoEU).
The seminar brought together experts to discuss the technological, governance and policy dimensions of marine renewable energy deployment, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges associated with the sustainable development of the sector.
During the session, Beatriz Arguilé (Marine Research Centre, University of Vigo) presented the technical aspects of wave energy and its potential contribution to the energy transition, providing an overview of current developments and opportunities for future deployment. Rosa Núñez, from the Galician Energy Institute (INEGA), focused on the policy and regulatory framework supporting marine renewable energies, addressing the main drivers and challenges for sector development.
Both speakers showcased several results generated within the AWESDI project, with particular emphasis on activities carried out under WP 1 and on Output 2.1: High-resolution Database and Maps of Atlantic Area Hotspots for Marine Energy. These results illustrate how AWESDI is contributing to improved knowledge, evidence-based decision-making and the identification of suitable locations for future marine energy deployment across the Atlantic Area.
The seminar provided an excellent opportunity to disseminate AWESDI results among students, researchers and stakeholders interested in the sustainable blue economy, while fostering dialogue on the role of wave energy in achieving Europe’s renewable energy and climate objectives.
