New AWESDI resource now available:
High‑resolution maps and database for marine energy assessment
Understanding where Marine Renewable Energy can be sustainably deployed starts with understanding the resource itself.
As part of its work to accelerate wave energy deployment across the Atlantic Area, AWESDI has released one of its first technical outputs: a high‑resolution database of atmospheric and oceanic variables together with a collection of spatially detailed maps of marine energy resources along the Atlantic coastline.
The new resource provides valuable information for researchers, developers, public authorities and other stakeholders interested in marine renewable energy. It includes data relevant to ocean energy production under both historical and future climate conditions, helping users better understand resource availability and regional differences across the Atlantic Area.
One of the main objectives of AWESDI is to reduce uncertainty around future wave energy deployment by improving access to scientific evidence and supporting a better understanding of suitable deployment conditions.
One of the main objectives of AWESDI is to reduce uncertainty around future wave energy deployment by improving access to scientific evidence and supporting a better understanding of suitable deployment conditions.
The database is complemented by a collection of maps describing the spatial distribution of marine renewable energy resources across the Atlantic Area coastline. While the main focus is wave energy, the resource also incorporates information related to offshore wind and solar energy, providing a broader perspective on marine renewable energy opportunities.
These resources form part of the first building block of the AWESDI Toolkit for Sustainable Design and Holistic Assessment, which will progressively integrate additional technical, environmental and socio‑economic resources to support informed decision‑making.
The objective is not simply to identify where the resource exists, but to provide evidence that can support future planning, technological development and sustainable deployment pathways across the Atlantic Area.
Supported by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, AWESDI is committed to ensuring that knowledge generated by the project can be shared, transferred and reused beyond the project partnership. By making scientific information openly available, the project contributes to building a stronger and more connected Atlantic marine renewable energy community.
